Edo Wonderland: A Time-Traveling Family Adventure in Japan

Are you dreaming of a family vacation that combines history, culture, and excitement? Look no further than Edo Wonderland in Nikko, Japan! As a local Japanese family with two children, we recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to this unique theme park. Join us as we share our experience and provide essential tips for foreign families planning to visit Japan with kids.

A Ninja’s Dream Come True: Our Journey Begins

Living in Tokyo with our 6-year-old son and daughter, we’re always on the lookout for exciting family adventures. Our son, a passionate ninja enthusiast, had been begging for a chance to train as a real ninja. When we discovered Edo Wonderland, with its promise of “ninja costume rentals and training sessions,” we knew we had struck gold.

Edo Wonderland is located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, a region famous for its UNESCO World Heritage sites and stunning natural beauty. Learn more about Nikko’s attractions here. The theme park recreates the atmosphere of Japan’s Edo period (1603-1867), offering visitors a chance to step back in time. We recommend purchasing tickets through Klook for great discounts. Get your Edo Wonderland tickets here.

Getting to Edo Wonderland is convenient by train, bus, or car. We opted for a rental car, making it a perfect two-day trip from Tokyo. Check out car rental options here. If you prefer public transportation, regular trains and buses run from Tokyo to Nikko Station, followed by a short bus ride to the park.

Stepping into the Past: Our Edo Wonderland Experience

As we arrived at Edo Wonderland, the excitement was palpable. The sight of towering gates and staff dressed in period costumes immediately transported us to another era. Our first tip for visitors: head straight to the costume rental area! Wearing Edo period attire enhances the experience immensely and makes for fantastic photo opportunities.

The costume rental process is smooth, but it can get busy. We recommend arriving early to avoid long waits, especially during peak seasons. Costumes are available for all ages, with options ranging from ninjas and samurai to elegant kimono for adults. Prices vary from 3,000 to 10,000 yen per person, depending on the costume type.

Once dressed in our Edo-style outfits, we collected an English map of the park. The map is essential, as the park is surprisingly large and hosts numerous activities throughout the day. It details the locations and times of various experiences, shows, and dining options.

Walking through the streets of Edo Wonderland feels like stepping into a movie set. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the architecture to the staff’s mannerisms. Every corner offers a new photo opportunity, making it a paradise for Instagram enthusiasts.

Ninja Training and Beyond: Activities for the Whole Family

The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the ninja training experiences. The basic ninja training session, available daily, is a 30-minute activity perfect for children. While there’s no strict age limit, it’s primarily geared towards kids, with parents watching and taking photos.

For a more immersive experience, we highly recommend the “Special Ninja Joint Training” available on weekends and holidays. This program, designed for children aged 5-12, is led by experienced ninja instructors. Our son, dressed in full ninja attire, participated in authentic ninja running techniques, practiced “kuji-kiri” hand gestures, and even got to “defeat enemies” in a thrilling finale. The look of determination and joy on his face was priceless.

Beyond ninja training, Edo Wonderland offers a plethora of activities. We explored the Ninja Shikake Mechanical Maze, visited the Ninja Training Hall, and watched captivating performances at the Ninja Theater. A particular favorite was the Oiran Parade, featuring beautifully dressed courtesans parading through the streets – a glimpse into another fascinating aspect of Edo period culture.

Savoring Edo: Dining and Accommodation

Edo Wonderland boasts several dining options that cater to various tastes. We enjoyed traditional udon noodles at one of the sit-down restaurants and savored delicious yakitori (grilled chicken skewers) from a street food stall. Don’t miss the chance to try soba noodles, a staple of Edo period cuisine, or indulge in Japanese-style desserts.

After a full day of time travel, we retreated to the nearby Kinugawa Onsen Hotel, just a 10-minute drive from Edo Wonderland. This traditional Japanese inn offers a perfect blend of old-world charm and modern comforts. Book your stay at Kinugawa Onsen Hotel here.

Riverside Serenity, Authentic Japanese Experience
Nestled along the Kinugawa River, this hotel offers an authentic Japanese experience with multiple hot spring baths and exquisite cuisine. Guests can enjoy spacious rooms with river views, wear yukata throughout their stay, and immerse in traditional hospitality. Located just a 10-minute drive from Edo Wonderland, it’s an ideal retreat for foreign tourists seeking Japan’s essence.

The hotel features both large public baths and private onsen (hot spring) rooms. We highly recommend booking a private onsen for a 45-minute slot – it’s an excellent way for families to enjoy the hot spring experience together without worrying about disturbing others. Book early, as these private baths are popular!

Our children were thrilled with the hotel’s pool, where, to our surprise, a professional swimmer offered impromptu swimming lessons. It’s these unexpected moments that make family trips truly memorable.

Creating Lasting Memories: The Magic of Edo Wonderland

Our Edo Wonderland adventure was more than just a fun day out – it was an immersive cultural experience that brought Japanese history to life for our children. Watching our son fully embrace his ninja training and seeing our daughter’s eyes light up during the Oiran Parade were moments we’ll cherish forever.

For foreign families visiting Japan, Edo Wonderland offers a unique opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture in an engaging, interactive way. It’s educational without feeling like a history lesson, and the variety of activities ensures that there’s something for every family member to enjoy.

A few tips for foreign visitors:😎

  1. Rent costumes for the full experience – it’s worth the extra cost especially for kids.
  2. Arrive early to make the most of your day and avoid queues.
  3. Check the schedule for shows and plan your day accordingly.
  4. Don’t hesitate to interact with the staff – they’re always happy to explain and demonstrate traditional crafts and activities.
