Ritz-Carlton Nikko: Our Hotel Stay Review

Like most families with young kids, we were excited but a bit nervous about our 2-night, 3-day stay at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko. We were looking forward to a relaxing getaway, but also wondering how we’d keep our energetic 3-year-old entertained. Nikko, with its UNESCO World Heritage site Nikko Toshogu Shrine, stunning Lake Chuzenji, and historic Kinugawa Onsen, promised a perfect blend of culture and nature. It’s an ideal spot for a quick trip from Tokyo, and we couldn’t wait to explore it as a family.

Location and Access

The Ritz-Carlton Nikko’s location is seriously impressive, right on the shores of Lake Chuzenji and surrounded by mountains. While you can get there by train and bus from Tokyo, we opted to drive. Fair warning: the famous Irohazaka road is a beauty with its 48 hairpin turns, especially in autumn, but it demands careful driving!

First Impressions

Pulling up to the hotel, we instantly got why The Ritz-Carlton chose this spot. The view of Lake Chuzenji is breathtaking, the air is super fresh, and the building itself is spotless. We couldn’t resist snapping family photos in the lobby both coming and going. For those driving, they offer valet parking at 3,000 yen per day (as of July 2024).

Accommodation

We settled into a king-bed room with a view of Mount Nantai. At 57 square meters (613 square feet), it was plenty roomy for our little family. The private balcony looking out over lush forests was a nice touch. Our room smelled pleasantly woodsy and was impeccably clean.

The hotel even lent us a DVD player so our little one could watch his favorite Totoro movie (for probably the millionth time – that DVD is getting worn out!).

Dining Experiences

Food-wise, we were spoiled for choice. Our first night, we lazily opted for room service.

The hotel’s breakfast was a real highlight – you can choose between Japanese and Western set menus, both served in beautiful locally-crafted wooden boxes. There’s plenty of other options too, including a kid’s menu.

One night, we ventured out to a local steakhouse called “Mihashi” for some amazing Wagyu and a surprising local specialty – a huge iron plate-grilled maitake mushroom dish. It takes 20 mins by car from the Ritz. (Google Map)

Onsen

The onsen at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko? Absolute top-notch. Beyond the healing hot spring water, the atmospheric lighting in the bathing area really set the mood. With both indoor and outdoor baths, it’s a must-try experience.

Other Facilities

While we didn’t use them, the hotel also offers a spa and fitness room.

There’s a Japanese restaurant serving sushi and kaiseki courses, and a Western restaurant with dinner courses and takeout options.

Activities and Nearby Attractions

We had a blast paddling a swan-shaped boat on Lake Chuzenji, right in front of the hotel. Kegon Falls, just a 5-minute walk away, was impressive with its 97-meter (318 feet) drop.

There’s an elevator down to a viewing platform, but bring a jacket – it gets chilly! On our last day, we visited a 3D dinosaur maze. It might not wow adults, but our dino-crazy toddler was over the moon.

Experience Japan’s Finest at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko

All in all, our stay at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko was the perfect mix of luxury and family fun. From the stunning views and relaxing onsen to the delicious food and nearby attractions, it ticked all our boxes. Whether you’re after a peaceful retreat or an adventure-filled family trip, it’s a great choice. For visitors wanting to experience a unique side of Japan beyond the big cities, we’d definitely recommend giving Nikko and The Ritz-Carlton there a shot. It’s the kind of place where both kids and adults can find something to love, making for an unforgettable Japanese getaway.
